Game, Set, Match! Serena

Serena Williams was recently in the news, not for winning another grand slam, but for a serious health condition. The multiple times Grand Slam winner was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles, where she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. While undergoing treatment she suffered from hematoma. Although throughout her career she has suffered from many injuries, this is a serious condition, which can result in death as well.

We need to understand what pulmonary embolism is so judge the gravity of the situation that she is going through. Pulmonary embolism is a problem where more than 1 artery in the lungs gets blocked. The biggest reason for this blockage is blood clots that can travel from any part of the body to the lungs. The common place where the clot occurs is the legs and as one can assume, Serena being a sportsperson, she was definitely prone to these kinds of clots. It is a life threatening condition, but if diagnosed early can be eliminated. Serena was witnessing chest pains and shortness of breath for some time and it was the timely advice of her elder sister Venus that actually made her see a doctor and get prognosis.

It is diagnosed by taking x-rays of the chest, a lung scan and a helical CT scan. As mentioned prompt therapy is a must. Its medications include anti-coagulants, clot dissolvers and surgical procedures. It could have been prevented by preventing the clots in one’s blood vessels.

Serena fortunately is recovering now and she only has her sister to thank for it. It was the early diagnosis that saved from a more serious condition. She is currently on blood thinners, which the doctors say will stop her from playing tennis for the next six months. But that how her career’s been so far, she would always come back from an injury to lift another title. But for now let us all just pray for her speedy recovery.

Health tips to learn from a celebrity

Celebrities are always held in awe by the common people. What they do, what they wear, how they talk, the way they walk are all scrutinized by the media and even by the common folks. The two most watched and most admired features of a celebrity are their clothes and their bodies. We shall focus on their bodies or rather their health and learn how they are able to maintain such perfect bodies and figures. One might get cynical and argue that they have the luxury of millions of dollars in their bank and can afford to develop those bodies. But it is not about the money, it is all about the will and proper guidance.

Here is a medley of some of the health tips followed by celebrities. A few celebrities recommend a monthly or quarterly health checkup. This is actually good as the sooner a disease is detected the easier it is to treat. Women can do monthly breast checkups.

The majority of celebrities are health conscious. They give very high importance to their diets and make sure they eat a healthy and wholesome diet. This does not mean that you spend extravagant amounts on the food by buying exotic foods. All it means is to pick a diet as per your health and your family’s preferences and stick to it, no matter what. One way how they stay thin is by eating a healthy breakfast within 30 minutes of getting out of bed. This tells the body to start burning the fat, which it otherwise stores.

The other element in their daily lives is that they always participate in some kind of activity or the other. These activities may range anything from exercising in a gym, horseback riding, rock climbing etc. We should also pick up any physical activity and then do it religiously.
